Doushuai Island is the biggest one in Dongjiang Lake, which looks like a giant lion crouching over the water. The most famous scenery in Doushuai Island is the mysterious Doushuai Karst Cave, a limestone cave with over 2.7 million years of history. Hiding behind the monk’s house beneath the cliff on the south of Doushuai Island, it has a widely spread legend and features great height, big size and depth, broadness and oddness. The cave is about 5,000m deep, 40m tall and 70m wide at maximum. There are small caves inside. People name those caves according to their shapes, meanings, or legends. The deep and winding cave is warm in winter but cool in summer. Stalactites hung from upside down while stalagnates rise up to the sky with transparent yet strange shapes. Walking into the cave, you will feel like traveling in a dreaming world, which is rarely seen in China.

“All caves look similar except this one”. In 1993, Rhodes Ken, American cave expert, said after his inspection, “You can find anything here that other caves have, and you can even find things that other caves don’t have. It is an ultra large rare karst cave of the world that is worth your visit.” He called it “maze of the nature”. The towering and magnificent stalagnates in the cave is as tall as 36m at maximum, being the tallest one in the world. After “Record of Divine Doushuai Rock”of Xie Yan in the Song Dynasty being included in “Famous Mountains under the Heaven”, the cave becomes busy everyday. There is an ancient temple built according to the mountain at the entrance of the cave, which is known Doushuai Temple that was with brick and wood structure. According to the research, the temple was built in the 51st year of the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong (in 1786), which worshiped Sakyamuni, Guanyin, Amitayus, and the eighteen arhat, etc. In the 56th year of the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong sculptures of Immortal Qigu and nine saints were made; in the 13th year of the reign of Qing Emperor Daoguang the Madonna was worshiped. Sculptures and the templed had been repaired in the 2nd year of the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu. Doushuai Island has attracted many visitors since ancient time for the island, the cave and the temple. Many ancestors and scholars had mounted on the cliff to make poems, expressing their emotions with the landscape. There is a poem going, “If you can’t see anything outside, you can find a special world inside the cave that has survived for a thousand years. The unique landscape must be built by the gods, so it is attractive to visitors, making them reluctant to leave”. In addition to its magnificence, Doushuai Karst Cave is a holy land to worship Buddhas and gods. On the right of the Buddha Hall in Doushuai Karst Cave is a spring, known as “Golden Duck Spring”. The legend has it that there were a pair of young couples wanted to have a son, so they came here to plead the Buddha. When they came to the Golden Duck Spring, a pair of golden ducks appeared from the water. The woman was shocked, but she touched the golden duck and felt a warm stream running into her heart. Later, she was pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy. From then on, there were endless pilgrims visited the mountain to plead for descendants. There were Buddha Hall, temple, monks and nuns in Doushuai Rock before liberation, but which were destroyed after liberation. Monks and nuns were forced to leave here. However, the legend of mysterious Doushuai Rock is still popular. The government had allocated funds to repair monk’s house, temple gate, pavilion, road, and lamps since 1980s, making it a famous attraction in south Hunan.
